Half of East Timor WiMax Connected
Voip June 9th, 2010
Dili – The four of us, Mr. Kemal Prihatman, Mr. Muchlis, Mr. Harry Sufehmi and I, set out from Indonesia to contribute to helping IT mission in East Timor, especially in the field of open source. We are in East Timor between 1-5 June 2009.
We were greeted by the friends of the Ministry of Infrastructure Timor-Leste an institution responsible for the problems of telecommunications, roads and energy. Friends who welcomed us was Mr. Paulo Dacosta, Mr. Hilman Akil and two other female staff. Mr. Paulo Dacosta who is a manager at the Ministry of Infrastructure. Medium, Mr. Hilman Akil is the advisor to the National Directorate of ICT in the Ministry of Infrastructure.
In our initial conversations with friends from East Timor, the thing that would appeal to us in Indonesia is the success of the Ministry of Infrastructure East Timor, led by Mr. da Silva Pedro Lay one Atmajaya graduates. East Timor’s National implementations Connevtivity Project (NCP) conducted by the National Directorate of the Ministry of ICT Infrastructure, which is led by Mr. Flavio C. Neves graduated from GMU.
Through the NCP, Ministry of Infrastructure Timor-Leste successfully connect the 5 districts of 13 districts in Timor Leste using WiMAX. Nearly half of Timor-Leste connected WiMAX. In addition, they also operate a VoIP, or more precisely its Next Generation Network (NGN) as we know it in the People’s VoIP over their WiMAX infrastructure.
This makes the overall telecommunications costs will be low. Dragons of his far left and Indonesia must learn to East Timor in the implementation of WiMAX & NGN.
National ICT Directorate under the Ministry of Infrastructure in East Timor is currently implementing the National Connectivity Project (NCP) which is a key infrastructure for e-government of Timor Leste that will come. Escorted by Mr. Hilman Akil an Indonesian, an MIT alumnus United States, who became advisor to the National Directorate of ICT tendering process to guard national connectivity project implementation carried out.
Basically, the National Connectivity Project (NCP) was born from the need for data communication to all levels of government in East Timor. This project will support data komnunikasi between departments with other departments, and between Dili district administration.
In the implementation, this NCP is three phase, ie Phase-1 to Dili and Baucau Oecusse, Phase-2 for Maliana, Ermera, Suai, and Batugade (the border), and Phase-3 Ainaro, Liquica, Aileu, Manatuto, Same, and Viqueque and an additional phase to the Border, namely Sakato, Salele and Bobomento.
All districts throughout the state of East Timor is likely to be fully connected at least late 2009 or early 2010. Inter-District used VSAT infrastructure using Telkom-2 satellite. From the capital district, inter-governmental offices are used WiMAX 802.16d version that works on the 3.5GHz frequency. Was in the government building used WiFi and LAN networks.
Even more amazing, the whole process of the National Connectivity Project (NCP) is done in a short time. NCP in August 2008 began the concept matured. Study process including appeals to the various countries that have been implemented in WiMAX as Nauru. There were 18 bidders who wish to participate in the NCP from various countries such as Australia, Portugal, Singapore, Singapore, Indonesia, with 9 pre-qualification, but only 7 participants who enter the document. Tender process in
won by Telkom Indonesia International is led by Mr. Mulya Tambunan.
The process of technology transfer at doing well. For the first stage, the implementation in three districts, Telkom Indonesia International is implemented while doing training for East Timorese.
For two (2) The next district, the implementation process carried out by friends of the East Timorese themselves with guidance from Jakarta. There are about 30 of the people of East Timor who were recruited as a help desk and call center for the implementation of the National Connectivity Project (NCP). One key to the success of the NCP is the budget allocation for capacity building, raising the capacity of human resources capabilities, including scholarships for staff to learn ICT NCP. Like one Linda was a graduate of NCP staff STT Telkom (now IT Telkom in Bandung).
Thus a brief report of developments in East Timor ICT sector that seems far more advanced than what we thought in Indonesia. We seem to need to learn also to East Timor.

Voip May 30th, 2010
A company found weaknesses in the system of internet protocol-based phone aka Voice over IP (VoIP). But the findings kept secret so as not to use the evil.
As quoted from Cellular-News, Sunday (29/6/2008), the weakness was discovered by VoIPshield Lanoratories, a network security specialist firm voice over internet protocol. That if exploited weaknesses could damage the company said VoIP device manufacturers that exist today.
VoIPshield refused to mention the weaknesses that they find the specifics. “We do not want to give ammunition to the hackers,” said Bogdan MATERNA, Chief Technology Officer VoIPshield.
But they said it would cooperate with the VoIP vendors to fix vulnerabilities. Avaya, Cisco and Nortel have learned is that weaknesses and has developed ways to overcome them
VoIP Goes To White Elephant
Voip May 22nd, 2010

People’s Science for VoIP was developed in Indonesia turned out to be useful also for other countries. Internet experts who are also activists VoIP Rakyat, Onno W. Purbo, was invited to the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) Thailand to provide workshops that took place on 7 to 9 April 2008.
This time, Onno gave a workshop on the implementation of Next Generation Network (NGN) and the Electronic Number Mapping (ENUM). InterLab held at AIT, where the workshops were held, Onno started to install VoIP equipment.
The first session, the introduction of VoIP, starting with creating an account at http:://fwd.pulver.com, http://www.voxalot.com, to exchange techniques in http://www.sipbroker.com SIP. Onno also give leak tricks how to get the number from the U.S. and how http://www.ipkall.com ’steal’ Telkom numbers using http://www.e164.org Thailand.
Log into the second session, Onno began demonstrating a technique called by using the IP Phone, Analog Telephone Adapter, until a call to PSTN or mobile by using fixed wireless gateway. Participants quite surprised to see a demo that made Onno, was from the local VoIP phones can call. Details of this technique was really quite clearly described in the Video VoIP DetikIINET and in the book “roots VoIP Bakal Telkom Rakyat”
At lunch, Prof.. Kanchana from the Department of Computer Science AIT and colleagues had discussed the possibility to Thailand to enable his ENUM Server. Even one of the emerging issues is the possibility to build ENUM Server at Asian level.
Prof. Kanchana is one of the IT & Internet activists in Asia Pacific and had a representative on the ICANN Asia which regulates the numbering and Internet domain name in the world.
Then in the third session, participants began to teach material that is harder to compile asterisk softswitch from source code. This makes the hangover a lot of participants. But after 2-3 hours on average of all works so well running its softswitch asterisk. Detailed techniques to compile asterisk softswitch can be read at the Technical Compile Asterisk on Ubuntu.
Onno evening dinner with Prof. Kanchana Kanchanasut from AIT at Korean restaurants, the first time was for a Onno eat at Korean restaurants with a few friends there including Assistant Deputy Minister of Finance and Former Chairman of the Commission on Human Rights.
One of the interesting stories that emerge are Thailand ever live without YouTube and various Internet sites for 9 months, because the government blocked the site. This occurred in the military coup in Thailand.
But now, supposedly elected governments do not dare close the YouTube site on the Internet especially. If it was done, they might not be a government that will be chosen again so that such possibility is avoided by elected governments.
Prof. Kanchana also had offers to join the InterLab Onno AIT Thailand, which became Adjunct Researcher, because InterLab AIT seems to be seriously implement ENUM for NGN and Thailand.
